The ShodaiGaru's name comes from shodai (初代?), meaning first generation, and Garu, which comes from Garu Garu's name.

In comparison to the RaishuGaru puppet, the ShodaiGaru is more organic in design. It has a beige underbelly and wings. Two puppets were made, with one representing Garu Garu after it lost its disguise. In Rebirth of Mothra II, the first puppet was modified to look more robotic, with its wings being supported by pistons, and weapons being attached to its side.
