The year is 1954, 9 years after Japan's biggest tragedy, which cost the lives of thousands of innocent people, the bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The world was left in shock by the destructive power of nuclear weaponry, and Japan, was left with nothing but a never healing scar. Japan have fell onto its knees, left at square 0, even though Japan could recover in this meantime, it would not rest for long...
March 1st, 1954. Another nuclear tragedy reaches Japan. The fishing boat Daigo Fukuryū Maru (Lucky Dragon No. 5) carrying a crew of 23 men, made into the international headlines after the crew ended up being contaminated by the nuclear fallout from Castle Bravo. The fallout was widely spread as far as Japan, India, Australia, Europe, United States and almost all the islands of the Oceania, and once again the power of the nuclear weaponry had doomed innocent lives. The Crew of the Lucky Dragon have suffered for weeks from acute radiation syndrome (ARS), with one of them passing away months later. But the consequences of the nuclear test would not just end in a nuclear
fallout.
Something else was affected by Castle Bravo...
October 25th, 1954. Japanese freighter Eiko Maru was swimming throw the waters near Odo Island when it vanished into thin air, leaving no trace of its existence. The Coast Guard after taking notice of this, send the rescue boat, Bingu Maru, to investigate the occurrence and possibly find survivors, but the rescue boat suffered the same fate as the freighter it was send to look after. However, unlike Eiko Maru, the Bingu Maru left survivors to tell the story. One of the survivors recalled a blue-hot flash before the boat being completely turned to shreds, some other survivors also talked about a large sea beast swimming away after the smoke of the destruction cleared. Over the next few weeks after this incident, multiple occurrences of fishing vessels going missing and sightings of strange creatures have been recorded in all the Pacific.
In Tokyo, the population of fish started to decrease suddenly, leaving multiple fishing community in crises, and the fishermen who dared to travel far away from their homes just to look for better fishing spots, were lost in the sea to the mysterious beast; In Hokkaido, many shipwrecks incidents, alongside sightings of a sea monster taking down the ships have been recorded. The creature was described as a kind of dinosaur or sea serpent, possessing rows of spikes running down its back and empty eyes. The monster was referred as Hōnengyo, after a sea monster from Japanese folklore; In New Zealand, the country’s navy have reported a giant spiked-back sea monster taking down their ships. The description matches with other reports around the Pacific, indicating that it could be the same creature; Some regions of Japan, Australia, India and other regions of the Pacific were suffering with an epidemic of a radioactive illness, thanks to a species of giant radioactive arthropods. Those arthropods where also found in places where the Hōnengyo was spotted; In the Marshal Islands and other small islands of the Oceania, people have reported attacks of a spiked-back monster, with people of an village of Marshal Island referring to the monster as VRADAKI (after a creature from their folklore). However, the story told by then stated that this VRADAKI was flying above their village, which contradicts the statement of Hōnengyo being an aquatic creature.
The number of reports of this sea monster around different places of the world was absurd, however some people were still skeptical about this creature existence, even with the many reports and visual description proving the creature’s existence. Eventually, someone would start studying the occurrences, the Japanese-American research team, Monarch.
Monarch at the time was a small project idealized by both Japanese and American paleontologists, biologists and researches to study cryptozoological incidents such as the sightings of the Loch Ness Monster. Because of the absurd premise behind its foundation, Monarch wasn’t taken very seriously because for many, cryptozoology is an absurd and futile concept. However, thanks to the multiple cases of sightings of the so called Hōnengyo, things would change for Monarch. The independent team of researchers and cryptozoologists were curious about the stories of this leviathan and started to investigate the case. And in their investigation, they noticed something. They noticed that, despite many occurrences throw all the pacific, most of the sightings of the monster were recorded near an isolated island named Odo Island. Coincidentally, the case of Eiko Maru (the first of these occurrences) also happened near Odo Island, and other reports pointed that the creature swam in the same direction in which the island is located. The team had their suspicions that the so called Hōnengyo actually lived there, however this would only be proven a few days later.
November 1st, 1954. The fisherman Masaji Yamada was the only survivor of a recent shipwreck. He and his crewmates were on board of the fishing vessel Mosura Maru when they were attacked by Hōnengyo. After he was rescued from the remains of the Mosura Maru, Yamada was interviewed by reporters, where he was asked about what happened. Masaji told that his community was going throw a crisis, so he and other fishermen of his community went to the outer sea for a better chance on catching fish, however, they were meet by the heinous sea monster.
“We could not believe in what’ve seen, the demon arose from the waters and approached our vessel, we couldn’t do anything, we tried to move the vessel, but it was already too late. He was merciless. I could only try to run away and hide as my crewmates screamed and drowned as the beast was ripping the vessel apart. I saw as my colleagues were devoured by a swarm of demonic crab-like creatures; these things jumped of the monster’s body while he destroyed the vessel! They couldn’t fight back against them, there were so MANY of them. There was a moment that I could take a good look at him. When I spotted him, I… was in shock… I recognized that figure immediately. I couldn’t believe it... I-I t-thought it was just a myth from Odo about an omen of fortune and good luck. It couldn’t be one of them, right!? Then he turned his head at my direction, he was staring directly at me. I couldn’t look directly at his eyes, there was something wrong about them. His eyes were… empty… like it lacked a soul... The last thing I could remember was hearing his roar, as I saw him swimming away… And there was I, the only survivor left from the Gojira’s wrath…”
-Masaji Yamada
Yamada’s story reverberated throw all the international press, titles like “Fisherman encounters the monster of the century!” or “Staring into death’s eyes: The man who survived Godzilla!” made into the headlines in all over the world. From all the stories of a monster taking down vessels, Yamada’s stood out from all of them, providing impressive levels of details that none of the other forementioned stories presented. Eventually, with all this repercussion, the story of Yamada and his close encounter with the monster (now) known as Gojira, would end up catching the attention of Monarch. After hearing about Masaji's story, Monarch saw a great opportunity. The team would be able to interview Masaji Yamada himself, in order to get some exclusive information, they also would organize an expedition to Odo Island, in order to investigate the case.
November 3rd, 1954. The expedition to Odo Island was realized by Monarch. The expedition team was composed of investigative reporters and was led by scientist Eiji Serizawa and paleontologist Kyōhei Yamane (two of Monarch's founders). When arriving at the island, they were meet by its peculiar environment. The unusual flora and the bizarre fauna of Odo, intrigued both reporters and Monarch’s researchers. The island fauna possessed a diversity of creatures that not even countries like Australia had. Strange birds, weird fur-covered reptilians, unusual arthropods resembling trilobites (this same species matches with the demonic-crustaceans from Yamada's story and the radioactive arthropods), weird mammalians and reptiles that, in Yamane's words: “looked like they came from prehistoric times. They had an uncanny resemblance with primitive archosaurs". But despite the unusual environment, they couldn't waste time admiring the fauna.
After some time, walking, they were meet with the people from Odo’s community. The Odonenses greeted the team with concern and sadness in their voice and eyes. They told to the expedition team that they were “cursed by the island’s greatest deity", as they said. Fish disappeared from the waters, their people were sick from a mysterious illness that came after the "mushroom cloud" appeared in the skies, the horned demons who lurked the island’s forest started to get more aggressive, and of course, their great beast god Gojira, was furious. When asked about Gojira, the elder of the Odonenses told that they used to be an omen fortune and good luck, benevolent beings that would bring peace to the land, however, after a mushroom-shaped cloud took the skies with a thunderous explosion, this beast god was dominated by the anger and vengeance. In the words of the elder Odonense, this Gojira was acting like this thanks to mankind’s arrogance and its nuclear weaponry. He believes that man’s stupidity and folly when trying to harness nuclear energy for destruction, have ignited a spark in the Gojira’s heart.
Serizawa asked him about where they could find Gojira, and the elder reacted in shock: "Are you crazy!?" he asked. It appeared that this seemed like a really idiot idea to the elder. But despite this, he told that Gojiras used to rest in a lake near the hill at the south of the island, but it was not a good idea trying to find it, as this Gojira was not like the others used to be, and now was just vengeful and dread beast. Not counting the fact that the most dangerous beasts of the island (besides the Gojiras) were more aggressive than usual. But either way, Serizawa decided to look for the Odonense leviathan anyway, despite all the warnings he received.
The team headed to the south, some of them were concerned about the risks of searching for such a creature in an unknown and potentially hostile environment, but despite all odds, the team proceeded on the expedition. On their way to the island’s south, they found a completely devastated village. The place was burn to the ground, and carbonized corpses could be found all over the ground. One of the reporters noticed an enormous footprint next to village. The footprint presented high levels of radiation as well as a crushed trilobite, it was clear whose footprint it was. This indicated that this destruction was a work of Gojira. However, despite the state of the location, it wasn’t uninhabited, as the group saw something feeding on the corpses left. They found what the Odonenses described as demons who lurked deep in the woods. The creatures were bipedal in a horizontal instance, possessed a reptilian appearance, stubby arm’s, reminding those of a T. rex, and bull-like horns protruded from their heads. Those horrifying demons were in a pack of at least 5 individuals, and appeared to be starving as they considered scatter carbonized corpses instead of hunting bigger prey. The pack slowly approached the group, hissing menacingly at their new found prey.
The group tried flee, running throw the dense woods of the Odo as the horned beasts approached them rapidly. While running Serizawa and Yamane spotted the south hills and directed the group to there so they could mislead the horned devils, but sadly some members of the group were unlucky, and were tragically caught by the monsters. The survivors managed to arrive at the hills, however, the horned beasts approached as the group meet a dead end. And there would be the end of this expedition, the entire team wound be devoured by ravenous beasts.
However…
As the beasts approached the group heard something, a series of deep sounds reverberating throw all the ambient, as the ground started vibrating and the sounds got louder and louder and the horned demon started to flee, Yamane realized something, they were footsteps, of something enormous… Out of nowhere, from behind the hills, a colossal figure aroused in all its glory. Saurian in appearance, jagged, sharp spikes protruding from its back and empty, white eyes. There it was, the monster feared in all the pacific, the leviathan of Odo Island, Gojira. As the group ran in fear and terror, Gojira unleashed a thunderous roar which echoed throw all the region.
Notes: The reason I decided to reupload this to Fandom is because I updated part of the lore that dind't make sense and was conflicting in relation to what was to come.
Also the 1st upload flopped and I want to try again (I just like comments you known)
And also decided to post with the Godzilla picture without filter because it was kinda crude (and a certain someone can stop saying Goji 1st desing has breasts😑)
Anyway... what you think?
