The Amberpede[1] is a myriapod superspecies that first appeared in the MonsterVerse animated series, Skull Island.

Name[]

The name is a portmanteau of amber , as a reference to its color pigment, and centipede. Its name was revealed in the Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure creature codex.[1]

Design[]

Appearance[]

The creature is remarkably similar to standard centipedes, albeit many times larger, even surpassing humans in size and height.

Roar[]

The Amberpede could be heard making rapid chittering and hissing noises during its confrontation with Cap.

Personality[]

The Amberpede was predatory in nature, and preferred to attack its prey directly rather than ambush them. However, if harmed or intimidated sufficiently, the arthropod monster will quickly give up the hunt and retreat.

Origins[]

Few creatures survive an Amberpede attack. The Amberpede is a blindingly fast, venomous chilopod that preys upon any creature its own size or smaller. The Amberpede shares a body structure with the much smaller American Desert Centipede, but it has a unique exoskeleton. The plates of the Amberpede's segmented body and many legs— two per body segment—are all made of a golden, semi-translucent, gemlike substance that resembles amber. Much of its body is made from this dense, flexible, and extremely hard material.

The exceptions to this body composition are the very tips of its front six forelimbs and its two-foot-long, saber-like pincer mandibles. These are all tipped with dark, stone-hard chitin that allows the Amberpede to both cling to any substance and puncture most creatures' hides with ease. Further enhancing its arsenal, the Amberpede is also equipped with copious stores of an injectable venom. This thin, sour-smelling fluid curdles a victim's blood into a thick soup in its veins and, while the venom is not immediately lethal, it slows down the victim's movements and cripples its ability to fight back against the Amberpede’s incessant attacks.

Highly adaptable, Amberpedes can be found in many Skull Island biomes. Their shallow, subterranean nests can be found nearly anywhere. Amberpedes congregate seasonally: a dozen or more will come together to engage in a horrifying breeding snarl that lasts for several hours before they scuttle away to find nests in which to lay their eggs.

There are some cryptozoologists that actually seek out Amberpedes, risking their lives to potentially harvest their venom. If applied properly following alteration by medicinal chemistry, it can be used to all but stop hemorrhages, and even to seal off shorn or amputated limbs, a practice they learned from the Iwi.

History[]

Skull Island[]

While running through the forests of Skull Island in search of his son, Cap was confronted by the Amberpede. As the massive insect reared up and prepared to attack, Mike shot the creature in the eyes with a flare gun. Disoriented and frightened, the giant centipede quickly retreated.

Abilities[]

Mandibles[]

The creature's main weapon was its double set of pointed mandibles.

Speed and agility[]

The Amperpede's numerous legs allowed it impressive speed when pursuing prey, and also allowed the creature to make a hasty retreat if need be.
