After an S.O.S. transmission from the Yahata Maru was sent out in the midst of a storm in the Sea of Japan, Goro Maki went to investigate the boat so that he could write an article on the incident. Upon arrival, he found the ship deserted and completely disabled. After further investigation, Goro found the bodies of the crew, all dead with their bodily fluids drained, and a single survivor, a young man named Hiroshi Okumura, who was badly wounded.
