"Beyond Logic" is the tenth and final episode of the first season of the MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Synopsis[]

The team struggles to find a way out of Axis Mundi. Kentaro and Tim make an unexpected alliance.

Plot[]

Axis Mundi

Cate stares at her grandmother who asks if she's alright and can walk. Cate recognizes the woman as Keiko Randa. Keiko insists they start moving. She questions where the rest of the rescue party landed. Cate explains she fell through a portal with other people. Keiko asks about Billy, assuming he or Lee is with her. Cate is hysterical over needing to find them. Keiko assures her they will and leads her away.

Tokyo

Kentaro asks Hiroshi why he was in Alaska. Hiroshi was trying to lure out a Titan to open a rift and prove it exists. There's a gateway that leads to their world. He did all this to prove that he and his parents were right. G-Day could have been avoided if his parents work wasn't dismantled by heretics. He blames Monarch for killing Cate, but Kentaro blames Hiroshi for only ever caring about his work. Hiroshi wanted to protect his children from Monarch and monsters. He knows now that they never needed his protection. He offers Kentaro the chance to save the human species by working together to solve the secret of co-existence. Kentaro agrees, but only if he can explain why he had two families. Hiroshi tries to justify his actions, so Kentaro leaves.

Axis Mundi

Keiko assumes Cate's rescue party has followed her beacon. Cate didn't get a signal, and Keiko realizes she's not part of a mission or Monarch. May emerges from the woods, and Cate hugs her tightly. Seconds later, Lee shouts from the woods, asking if that's Keiko. He doesn't show himself from the woods yet, just saying it's Lee. She notes that his voice is different. He tells her to stay there as she needs to understand things first. She thinks she's only been down there for 57 days. Lee came down after she fell for a recon mission, but the mission was in 1962. He thought he was there for a week, but it was 1982 when he got home. That was 33 years ago. Keiko sobs as she realizes how much time she's lost. She asks Cate and May if it's really 2015. Lee emerges from the woods to show himself. He cries at the idea of her being alive. Lee touches her face as they reunite. She asks about Billy, and Lee has to tell her that he died long ago. Keiko can't handle it and walks several paces away. She asks Lee about Hiroshi, and Cate admits he's okay. She knows because she's Keiko's granddaughter.

Monarch Headquarters

Verdugo updates Tim about the outposts and gamma rays. He asks about Duvall, but she hasn't heard from the former agent. Tim asks about the signal they found, as it indicates there's a survivor in the portal, but Verdugo isn't worried about that right now because of the Titan threat. She's not taking resources to save three people. Tim thinks those three people might have the answers they need. They can't pretend not to hear those who need help. Verdugo's hands are tied. Tim tells her to untie them, or Shaw was right about Monarch and her. She asks him to take his seat, do his job, and help them deal with this crisis.

Axis Mundi

The survivors reach Keiko's campsite. Lee sees the Gamma Radiation Simulator that Keiko reconfigured to send out a pulse to alert Monarch of where she is. She's surprised Monarch made it to 1962. Cate tells her they're around today and that Hiroshi was part of it. Keiko wants to know about her son. Hiroshi is a family man who followed in his mother's footsteps. When Monarch wouldn't let him do the work, he did it himself. He doesn't know when to stop. Keiko asks if he's happy. Lee thinks she can find out for herself. He wants her to rewire the machine back to its original configuration. Lee can take her home if she does.

Tokyo

Hiroshi is in his apartment with Emiko and Hiroshi. He's packing up what is left of his belongings to visit San Francisco for a few days. He needs to do a few things for his divorce. Emiko called everyone after the attack on San Francisco and never gave up hope that he would come home. She and Kentaro dreamed about this day. Kentaro deserves a relationship with his father, regardless of what Hiroshi did to her. She tells him to let Kentaro know where he's staying when he figures it out. She puts a wedding ring in one of his boxes. Hiroshi merely nods and leaves.

Axis Mundi

May, Cate, Lee, and Keiko struggle to carry the Gamma Radiation Simulator up a hill. They worry about how much time is passing back home.

Tokyo

Kentaro sits at a bar while drawing a map on napkins. He remembers drinking with May there. Tim sits next to Kentaro at the bar. They swap leg injury updates. Kentaro wants to know why he's there. Tim shows Kentaro a signal of gamma-ray bursts from the rifts. It's a message for help. Kentaro doesn't understand what it means, but Tim is hopeful that Hiroshi might.

Axis Mundi

Keiko and Lee rest from the upheaval. He can't believe she hasn't changed at all. She's been talking to him and Billy in her head the whole time she's been there. She asks what happened to Billy. He heard Billy was leading an expedition on an island to prove a theory about the rifts, but never came back. Lee knows he was the last man standing and saved everything he and Keiko built. She corrects that the three of them built it. Keiko gets emotional over how much time she's lost. She asks what 2015 is like - even the word sounds fantastic. He gives her a rundown of electronics and the moon landing - which he missed because he was in the rift. It's the same world, same people, conflicts, triumphs, moms, dads, and kids. He goes to check in on their kids.

Tokyo

Hiroshi watches part of the recording Billy made for him on Skull Island. He hears a knock on the door. He answers it to find Tim and Kentaro on the other side. Hiroshi is uninterested in working with Monarch, which is good because Monarch wouldn't touch him anyway. Tim shows him the gamma-ray bursts coming from inside the rifts. These rays are a coherent signal. He thinks Cate could be alive. Hiroshi calls it impossible, but Tim points out that Lee came back. Hiroshi refuses to believe it. Kentaro is willing to help Hiroshi with his journey, but first, they find his sister. Hiroshi knows Monarch won't help. Tim reveals he quit Monarch as they aren't the only game in town.

Axis Mundi

The survivors continue to carry the Gamma Radiation Simulator. Cate asks why the world looks like Earth if they're in the realm of the Titans. Keiko doesn't think they're in the Titans' world but a place between the two worlds. She calls it Axis Mundi. Cate recognizes it as meaning "between Heaven and Earth." May wonders how light can get in if they're underground. Lee challenges her belief that they're underground or fell. They might have just entered. They're in the rabbit hole now. The foursome carries the Gamma Radiation Simulator the rest of the way to where Lee landed years ago. He opens the pod and climbs inside with Keiko. Cate looks over the land while May puts her arm around her. Lee is thrilled that the pod still works. The group works together to hook up the pod and the Gamma Radiation Simulator. They hear roaring in the distance. Lee checks on Keiko, whom abruptly admits she's staying behind. Billy is gone, her son grew up without her, and she won't uproot his life by reappearing suddenly. It's not her world out there anymore. Cate refuses to accept her staying. These monsters have taken everything from her. She won't let them take Keiko too. The curse is broken with them. Cate insists that Keiko still has work to do up there. She needs her to come back. Moved by her granddaughter's speech, Keiko agrees to come with them. They load into the pod and prepare for takeoff. An Ion Dragon Titan, who was already there, is lured to their location. Cate alerts him that something is coming through the rift now. The Ion Dragon circles back and smacks the pod, disconnecting the cord from the pod and the Gamma Radiation Simulator. Lee exits the pod and struggles to reattach the cord as an Ion Dragon closes in. The creature roars at Lee, but is startled by another roar coming through the rift. The Titan retreats as Godzilla emerges from the rift. The Ion Dragon attacks Godzilla, and the creatures have a brutal fight. Godzilla tears the Ion Dragon's right wing off before throwing it through the rift. The pod starts heading for the rift. Lee has to run after it and barely grabs onto Keiko. Lee knows it's too much weight, but Keiko refuses to let go. He thanks her for everything and pries her hand off. She screams after him as they pass through the rift. May closes the lid on the pod and tells Keiko to strap in. Cate and May hold hands as the pod shakily enters the rift, traveling home.

The rift spits out the pod to an unknown platform. Keiko opens the lid and observes new world. The girls stand together as agents escort them from the pod. Kentaro reunites with Cate and May. Hiroshi is there and he emotionally embraces his daughter. He spots Keiko over Cate's shoulder. Cate leads him over, and Hiroshi recognizes his mother. She hugs him tightly and apologizes for being gone for so long. Cate introduces Kentaro to their grandmother. Brenda Holland and Tim walk over to escort them to the medic. They also must go through a debriefing. Brenda reveals she funded the operation. May, angry, asks if Tim is working for Brenda now. Kentaro admits a lot has changed in the last two years. An alarm blares and causes everyone to run back inside the Apex Cybernetics Skull Island research station. Kong trudges through the island before he stops to pound his chest and roar.
