Origins[]
The head of a Crystal Fang Serpent is remarkably large and generally cone-shaped. Its jaws actually split along eight separate lines, so that when it opens its mouth, it has eight flared out segments, each about six inches in length. The tip of each segment features a diminutive eye and a pressure sensing organ, and the insides of its mouth are brightly colored, resembling corals, anemone, or sea stars.
To hunt, the Crystal Fang Serpent will open its mouth and remain largely motionless for hours at a time. In addition to the colorful display that this creates, the serpent emits an aroma into the nearby waters that attracts many different species of fish. In smaller species, this aroma also induces a narcotic-like effect that both causes them to linger and slows their response to the serpent’s eventual attack. When prey comes close, the serpent will strike with lightning speed.
What a casual inspection of their mouths does not reveal, however, are the needle sharp, crystal teeth that line them. These fangs give the creature its name, and they are nearly invisible. Curiously, the fangs are not part of the serpent's body. Instead, they are cultivated from the secretions of Rampart Turtles in whose shells the Crystal Fang Serpents make their homes In addition to having a powerful bite when it snaps its jaw shut, the Crystal Fang Serpent also wraps its body around its prey, to both immobilize and crush it. After its captured prey has stopped moving for several minutes, the Fang Blossom moves to ingest it whole. It then curls up and tucks its head into one of its coils, making the creature difficult to distinguish from a pile of roots
