Similarities to the Godzilla franchise[]
In 1942, as part of the Superman cartoon shorts by Paramount, "The Arctic Giant" was released. The short depicted a Godzilla-esque scenario, which predated the original 1954 film by 12 years.
Crossover with the MonsterVerse[]
While not directly involving Godzilla as part of the DC Comics universe, there is a crossover limited comic book series titled Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, which was released on October 17, 2023. It was revealed at the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) on July 20, 2023.
Trivia[]
- Unlike Marvel Comics, DC Comics has never been explicitly involved with tokusatsu productions; however, a few attempts for crossovers with DC characters and tokusatsu characters have never been made for various reasons.
- Although this has been the first official crossover with DC characters and Godzilla characters, there was going to a film in the late 1960s titled Batman Meets Godzilla, along with the American film studio Greenway Productions. This film was cancelled due to lack of interest for development and viewership declining for the 1966 Batman television series.
- Furthermore, in 1996, there was a concept idea titled Batman vs. Kamen Rider, which was proposed by Batman artist Jerry Robinson and Kamen Rider creator Shotaro Ishinomori, but it was canceled due to Ishinomori's death from a heart disease in 1998.
- One exception to this is the six-issue crossover comic book miniseries Justice League/Power Rangers, which was published between January and September of 2017. This miniseries includes a crossover between the Justice League and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, with the latter based on Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, the 16th installment in the Super Sentai metaseries.
