The Frost Vark is a subterranean-dwelling unidentified Titan[1] from the MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, first appearing in the episode "Secrets and Lies".
Name[]
The Frost Vark's name refers to the ice it creates as it feeds on thermal energy and its vague resemblance to an aardvark. In an interview with PopCulture.com, executive producer Matt Fraction revealed the name of the creature to be "Frost Vark Titan". As with all unidentified superspecies discovered by Monarch, the Frost Vark is classified as a Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism, or M.U.T.O.[1]
Design[]
Development[]
Executive producer Matt Fraction has stated that inspiration for the Frost Vark came from animals like star-nosed moles and pangolins.[1]
Appearance[]
The Frost Vark is a quadrupedal creature adorned with overlapping layered, angular, dermal armor plates that protrude outward. These scaly plates cover the entirety of the creature's body, extending from its head to its lengthy tail. Interstitial spaces within the armor are occupied by thick tufts of hair. The creature's formidable feet are equipped with large mole-like claws.
Most notably, the Frost Vark possesses sensory tendrils that emanate from its snout. These tendrils, numbering at least a dozen, are capped with bioluminescent globules in a vibrant shade of blue. Its jaws are equipped with an array of jagged fangs. The Frost Vark's blue eyes are positioned far back on its head, mostly concealed beneath plate-like armor.
Roar[]
The Frost Vark produces deep, bellowing roars.
Personality[]
The Frost Vark demonstrates a pronounced and indiscriminate hostility towards encountered entities, engaging in unprovoked aggression upon detecting the presence of objects or organisms above the snow-laden terrain from its subterranean position beneath the permafrost.
The Frost Vark will hunt and feed on anything that emits thermal energy in its frigid environment. However, this behavior means that it can become easily distracted by any form of heat while pursuing smaller prey.
History[]
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters[]
In 2015, a Frost Vark attacks Lee Shaw's group in Alaska as they search for Hiroshi Randa. Du-Ho, the group's pilot, attempts to fight off the Frost Vark with his plane, but the creature immediately disables the aircraft with its claws before freezing Du-Ho to death by draining the surrounding temperature. The Frost Vark then stomps on the wreckage before it turns its attention towards Lee Shaw, Cate Randa, Kentaro Randa, and May Olowe-Hewitt. Just as it closes in on Kentaro, the latter shoots a flare gun that temporarily distracts it before resuming its focus on Lee's group. The Frost Vark is unable to locate the humans after they took cover inside a glacial tunnel, and wanders off from the area.
Later that night, the Frost Vark senses the campfire that Lee's group had created, and proceeds to burrow underneath it and break through the ground before consuming all of the flames. This gives Lee the idea to distract the creature with Du-Ho's frozen body and ignited aviation fuel from Du-Ho's plane so that he, Cate, and May can escape to an approaching Monarch helicopter. The Frost Vark feasts on the flames before it pursues the helicopter, only to give up the chase when the aircraft is far above its reach.
Several days later, the Frost Vark is drawn to the Alaskan Hollow Earth vortex as Lee Shaw and Michelle Duvall lead a Monarch team to destroy it with explosives. After bursting out from the ground, the Frost Vark sprints towards the helicopter that Lee and Michelle are on and leaps towards it, before it is sucked into the closing Hollow Earth vortex that the Monarch team obliterated.
Abilities[]
Armor[]
The entirety of the Frost Vark's body is covered in sharp, angular, dermal armor plates that jut outwards, which granted it enhanced protection.
Bioluminescent sensory tendrils[]
The Frost Vark possesses at least a dozen specialized sensory tendrils, which encircle its snout. These tendrils remain in perpetual motion as the creature actively investigates its surroundings. Notably, these sensory tendrils exhibit a distinctive bluish hue at their tips, emanating from bioluminescent globules.
Burrowing[]
As a subterranean creature, the Frost Vark exhibits the notable capacity for burrowing within the Alaskan permafrost of its snowy tundra environment.
Claws[]
The Frost Vark is equipped with powerful, mole-like claws on each foot, facilitating effortless tunneling through diverse substrates such as the ground and the Alaskan permafrost. These robust claws demonstrate significant strength, with the capacity to disable and dismantle sizable aircraft, as well as the physical prowess to crush partially frozen airplanes.
Heat absorption[]
Due to it being a thermovore, the Frost Vark possesses a unique physiological ability to rapidly draw in large volumes of heat through its oral cavity. This action facilitates a rapid decrease in the ambient temperature of its surroundings, resulting in a substantial reduction in thermal energy as it absorbs the heat that it metabolizes. The consequential temperature drop is of such magnitude that it induces the solidification of both inorganic and organic materials within a matter of seconds.
Thermolocation[]
The Frost Vark relies on external heat emission to orient itself through frigid tundra environments and to find sustenance. It can sense active engines of aircraft, humans, and explosions in the middle of a snowy terrain, as well as burning campfires fueled by wood.
