The Galloping Crocodile[1] is a giant crocodilian superspecies that first appeared in the MonsterVerse animated series Skull Island on Netflix.

Name[]

The first part of its name refers to the creature's digitigrade stature and ability to gallop at high speeds. Its name was revealed in the Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure creature codex.[1]

The species originally had no official name or designation. Series developer Brian Duffield gave it the nickname "Croc",[2][4][5] and was referred to as "Croc Monster" in the show's design sheets.[3]

Design[]

Appearance[]

Similar to standard crocodiles, these creatures possess large osteoderms and scutes that extend along their dorsal surface in three rows in triangular patterns, serving as protective armor. Notably, the central row of osteoderms is slightly larger than the other two. Despite their massive bodies, these creatures exhibit a relatively small skull in proportion to their overall size. Their jaws are lined with numerous needle-like teeth, and their pale yellow eyes appear to lack discernible pupils. Most strikingly, these creatures possess four limbs with cat-like characteristics, allowing for exceptional terrestrial mobility. This unique limb structure also enables the creature to briefly assume a bipedal stance.

Personality[]

The predatory behavior of the crocodile became apparent as it quickly initiated pursuit upon detecting the presence of the lost teenagers, Mike and Charlie. It exhibited a relentless drive, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to pursuing its prey. Notably, the crocodile displayed remarkable tenacity by exhibiting a willingness to throw itself down a massive waterfall in order to maintain the chase. These observations highlight the crocodile's instinctual predatory behavior and its ability to adapt its hunting strategy to overcome obstacles in pursuit of securing its prey.

Origins[]

One of the most startling predators on Skull Island appears, at least at first glance, to be a huge crocodile...until it stands up on its hind legs and begins to "gallop" at high speeds after its prey! These monstrous reptiles are colloquially known as "Galloping Crocodiles," and they are the deadly masters of the muddy rivers of Skull Island. They grow to impressive lengths of about 25 feet from snout to tail, and, when they stand on their strong hind legs, they reach about 15 feet in height. They weigh about one ton on average in adulthood. Their hide is thick and covered with fine scales the colors of dark and deep water, which is where they rest while digesting their most recent meal.

These reptiles are persistent and clever, chasing prey up and down the rivers that they prowl, even following the same target for half a mile or more. When they don't have suitable prey in sight, they can be practically lethargic, floating along their rivers waiting for their next big hunt and conserving their energy. When roused to action, they will eat just about anything, however, superspecies or not, to sate their incredible appetites.

Galloping Crocodiles lay eggs that they defend ferociously, and they generally hatch a dozen or so young at a time. When hatching season comes, these large eggs attract other predators to the rivers, turning the already deadly rivers of Skull Island into battlegrounds between mighty predators, as well as targets for smaller, opportunistic creatures that try to run off with an egg or two. Young Galloping Crocodiles eat small prey at first, but seem eager to make larger catches, even when outclassed. The young have not developed their spiky ridges or herculean musculature, but they are observed to be wantonly aggressive with nearby prey animals, exhausting themselves in unsuccessful hunts. They learn quickly, though, that patience pays off, both by watching their parents and by hard-earned experience in the waterways of Skull Island.

Abilities[]

Jaws strength[]

Similar to other crocodilians, Galloping Crocodiles possessed a formidable weapon in the form of its powerful jaws. With a single bite, it was capable of inflicting severe damage and mutilating human bodies within a matter of seconds. The sheer force and efficiency of its jaws allowed the monster to ravage its prey swiftly and effectively.

Claws swipe[]

Galloping Crocodiles display forelimbs with elongated proportions, resembling those of felines, and featuring sharp claws. This unique limb structure allows for them to effectively slash at its prey, potentially causing significant harm. Notably, the forelimbs appeared to be slightly longer than the rear limbs, providing an additional advantage in predatory pursuits.

Speed and agility[]

The feline-like limbs of Galloping Crocodiles provide them with improved mobility and agility when navigating on land. This anatomical adaptation granted the creature enhanced speed and maneuverability, enabling it to effectively pursue and capture prey outside their aquatic habitat.

Semi-aquatic nature[]

Though Galloping Crocodiless spend most of their time submerged underwater, they are capable of leaving the water to pursue prey on land.

Intelligence[]

The Galloping Crocodile tailing Mike and Charlie displayed an advanced level of intelligence by actively avoiding rivers with waterfalls when hunting. It demonstrated strategic thinking by staying close to the shorelines of rivers and areas where it could easily jump onto land to continue pursuing its prey. By adapting its hunting strategy based on observing its current situation, the monster demonstrated a smart and calculated approach to maximize its chances of a successful hunt.
