Giant Dodos, also known as Didus dux,[1] are a large avian superspecies that appear in the MonsterVerse book, Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure, as well as the animated Skull Island series.

Name[]

Giant Dodo are named after dodos, extinct birds that they are related to and resemble. Didus dux is derived from Didus ineptus, a synonym of the scientific name of dodos, Raphus cucullatus, and dux, which means leader or commander.

Design[]

Appearance[]

Giant Dodos exhibit a notable resemblance to their smaller counterparts, the standard Dodo bird. However, they display a significant increase in size, surpassing that of humans. Their physical appearance includes a thin layer of blueish-purple feathers and down, while their legs lack any form of covering, resembling the leg structure observed in ostriches and ending in talons.

Personality[]

The Giant Dodos exhibit a notable level of aggression, being predatory in nature. When encountering perceived threats or potential prey, these birds display a charging behavior accompanied by loud screeching, aiming to incapacitate or eliminate their target. They are extremely reckless, and combined with their aggression and inability to register fear, they often fail to kill their primary food source, the Trapdoor Crabs, - even en masse- who in turn are more prone to consume the Dodos due to this questionable strategy. Despite this, the Giant Dodos change neither their methodology nor their prey. A Giant Dodo will not halt its attacks unless its target either flee, or either one of them is dead.

Origins[]

The Giant Dodo is a Skull Island oddity. This gargantuan and gangly bird stands nearly 10 feet in height. It has blue-purple plumage; flightless wings; long, thin legs and neck; wickedly sharp talons; and a massive, curved beak. Although its speed has not been clocked, reports suggest that the Giant Dodo could easily outpace most Skull Island predators.

Contrary to what might be expected, the Giant Dodo uses neither beak nor talons to attack. Instead, the massive bird runs full-tilt at its prey and uses its beak like a battering ram or club. Its primary food source is the Trapdoor Crab, which Giant Dodos hunt en masse in large flocks called "Squawks". The sight of the birds noisily converging on a crab in an attempt to overwhelm it by sheer numbers is a breathtaking, and somewhat comical, sight. Many Dodos often perish in these predation events, as wave upon screeching wave of birds careen off their heavily armored opponent like breakers against a rocky island. Such encounters often provide more Dodo meat for the Trapdoors than visa-versa, and yet this does not deter the Giant Dodos from repeating them daily.

It is speculated that, true to its extinct monikers, the Giant Dodo combines extreme aggression with the inability to register fear. This may explain its oblivious, reckless, and repeated attacks on whatever it perceives as a food source. A Giant Dodo attack will continue unabated until the target is able to flee or one of the two is dead. Biologists presume that the bird reproduces and matures rapidly, because they are prevalent on Skull Island despite their reckless, and frequently suicidal, hunting strategy.

History[]

Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure[]

The Giant Dodos appear in the game's Isle of the Damned expansion.

Skull Island[]

A Giant Dodo attacks Annie, Charlie, Mike and Dog, but the latter makes quick work of it. The group then proceed to cook the monster and consume it.

Abilities[]

Beak[]

The Giant Dodos use their massive, curved beaks, not in the traditional or conventional sense, but as a battering ram/club, repeatedly hitting their target.

Speed[]

Giant Dodos are fast runners, capable of instantly accelerating and achieving great speed, even outpacing most predators on Skull Island.

Super Fecundity[]

The Dodos are presumed by biologists to reproduce as well as mature very quickly, due to their prevalence in Skull Island notwithstanding their reckless and suicidal hunting strategy.

Talons[]

The Dodos possess "wickedly" sharp talons, though they are unused at least in hunting.
