Overview

Godzilla: War for Humanity Issue #1 is the first issue of IDW Publishing's 2023-2024 Miniseries Godzilla: War for Humanity. It was published on August 16, 2023.

Description[]

"Godzilla saved us that day.” When Dr. Yuko Honda was young, she was chased by Hedorah, the smog monster, and thought it was all over…until Godzilla saved her! Now a respected professor and writer, she’s dedicated her life to showing that while Godzilla may be a monster, that doesn’t mean it and the other kaiju are enemies. Unfortunately, when a strange new monster emerges, her belief in the good of Godzilla will be put to the test. If Godzilla doesn’t defend them, what can humanity do against the might of ZOOSPORA?! Find out in this titanic tale written by Andrew MacLean (Head Lopper) with art by Jake Smith (Blood Force Trauma)!"[1][1]

Plot[]

25 years before the events of the main story, Yuko Honda and her best friend Megumi became lost in the forests of rural Japan, where they encountered the smog monster Hedorah. The creature was attempting to consume smoke trapped within a mountain, spewing lava in the process. Just as Megumi and Yuko were on the brink of death, Godzilla appeared and engaged Hedorah in battle. The girls managed to return home, where Megumi’s parents were frantic with worry. Yuko’s mother, however, seemed indifferent to the fact her daughter had been missing for seven hours. Meanwhile, Godzilla and Hedorah clashed for three days before Godzilla finally triumphed. The battle caused only 2.3 million yen in damages—remarkably low compared to the average kaiju attack in this world.

A quarter-century later, Dr. Yuko Honda, now a professor and lecturer in Kaiju Studies, recounts this formative story in a speech, praising Godzilla as humanity’s unlikely savior. During her lecture, Phazon Fullchech—a billionaire tech mogul and constant thorn in Yuko’s side—hacks into the Anti-Monster Task Force’s database to broadcast holographic footage of Gorosaurus and Manda being intercepted and slain by a new kaiju, Zoospora, during their migration. Afterward, Phazon approaches Yuko with an invitation to join Kaiju Task Force Alpha.

At the same time, Yuko’s mother secretly sends Yuko’s fifteen-year-old daughter, Samantha Honda, to San Francisco—though Yuko herself is nowhere near the city. At Anti-Monster Task Force headquarters, Yuko meets the team led by Colonel Elise Guerrero, including neuroscientist Dr. Johnny Wiggums, Phazon Fullchech, and their associate Barry. They brief her on Zoospora and reveal their plan to combat it using Phazon’s latest invention: the mech M.O.G.U.E.R.A. Yuko objects, insisting that Godzilla remains humanity’s best chance of defeating Zoospora. While Elise and Phazon move forward with the mech project, Johnny discreetly informs Yuko that Godzilla is currently on Monster Island with Minilla, locked in battle against Ebirah.
