Overview

Godzilla: War for Humanity Issue #2 is the second issue of IDW Publishing's 2023-2024 Miniseries Godzilla: War for Humanity. It was published on August 27, 2023.[1]

Description[]

"The menace of Zoospora spreads! The new monster on the block is going after Anguirus and the only hope against either is a robot called MOGUERA! The only hope, that is, unless Drs. Honda and Wiggum can find out any information about this new threat from…the Voice! And where is Godzilla?!"[2]

Plot[]

Anguirus, midway through its migration route, makes a routine stop in Madagascar. Monitored by the Anti-Monster Task Force’s Department of Kaiju Migration, the spiked titan is suddenly ambushed by an unknown kaiju designated Zoospora. As the two monsters clash, Commander Phazon Fullchech orders the deployment of M.O.G.U.E.R.A. from Kaiju Task Force Alpha Headquarters, with the elite Power Team Alpha at the controls.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yuko Honda and Dr. Johnny Wiggum travel to San Francisco International Airport to pick up Yuko’s daughter, Samantha. During the reunion, Wiggum receives urgent news: Zoospora has engaged Anguirus, and M.O.G.U.E.R.A. has been launched to contain the threat. Samantha, confused by Wiggum’s presence, watches as the adults react to the escalating crisis. Back in Madagascar, Anguirus initially appears to gain the upper hand—until Zoospora constricts the creature and spews a murky, tar-like fungal substance into its mouth, killing it and bringing the once-mighty kaiju under its mind-control.

While monitoring these events, Wiggum recalls an episode of Seymour Finnegan’s Talking with Kaiju, in which Finnegan claims to have encountered a sentient, telepathic blob inside Mongolia’s fabled “Talking Cave”—a being rumored to communicate directly with kaiju. Inspired, Yuko formulates a daring new plan.

At the same time, the Star Falcon and Land Moguera arrive over Madagascar, combining to form M.O.G.U.E.R.A. to confront Zoospora. But before they can fire, the zombified Anguirus attacks, mimicking its new master’s tactics by attempting to regurgitate the same infectious substance into the mech’s cockpit. Zoospora then hurls Anguirus aside and drenches M.O.G.U.E.R.A. itself with the toxic secretion, infecting the Power Team with its mind-controlling spores.

Yuko, Johnny, and Samantha race to Mongolia, accompanied by a local guide personally recommended by Seymour Finnegan. En route, they receive devastating updates: the mind-controlled M.O.G.U.E.R.A. Power Team has turned on Commander Fullchech and Colonel Elise Guerrero, while Anguirus lays waste to Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo. Upon reaching the Talking Cave, Yuko confronts the enigmatic Blob, demanding to know Zoospora’s purpose. The entity responds coldly: humanity, it claims, is a pestilence—a virus driving extinction and planetary collapse. Zoospora is the Earth’s “antivirus,” using mind-controlled kaiju to cull the human population and restore ecological balance. Godzilla, it alleges, permits Zoospora’s campaign.

Shaken to her core, Yuko struggles to reconcile this revelation with her lifelong faith in Godzilla as humanity’s protector. As she steps outside to clear her thoughts, the Shobijin—Mothra’s twin priestesses—appear. They warn that the Blob’s story is incomplete. According to Mothra, Godzilla remains on Monster Island not to enable Zoospora’s purge, but to protect his son, Minilla, from the fungal menace.

Summoning all her courage, Mothra departs for Monster Island to rally Godzilla. But Godzilla, fiercely protective of Minilla, perceives the intrusion as a threat, igniting a colossal battle between the King of the Monsters and the Guardian of the Earth.
