The Godzilla (ゴジラ?) of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers continuity is an irradiated reptile Gojiradaikaiju that appeared as an antagonist-turned-protagonist of the Boom! Studios-IDW Publishing crossover comic series Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers II.
Godzilla encounters the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers after an accidental teleportation brings the team to Godzilla's world, where Godzilla briefly fought them before joining forces against Rita Repulsa's army of monsters. In the sequel series, Godzilla lends his energy to the Power Rangers as the source of the Green Kaiju Ranger and the basis for the Godzilla Kaiju Zord.
Design[]
Appearance[]
The Power Rangers version of Godzilla that appears in the crossover borrows the same appearance as the Heisei Godzilla, being a bipedal dinosaurian creature with gray maple leaf-shaped dorsal plates, a husky build with a knobbish texture, and has rows of bumps on his forehead. There are subtle modifications to it; for instance, he appears to be lighter than the Heisei variant, almost having a pale green tinge in some panels, and his eyes are white at times.
Roar[]
Godzilla's roars are written as "skreeee", "skreeeoonnk", "skreeee-thoom, and "skrrrrnk".
Personality[]
Like most incarnations in the film series, Godzilla is a semi-animalistic combative kaiju. His first instinct toward another creature that threatens it is to attack it, and is uninterested in listening to them first. However, his actions are not done out of malice, but rather, he acts to protect the Earth and its inhabitants from the threat of other dangerous kaiju. Although, due to his fierce personality, he often goes about doing this aggressively without care about what gets in his way. Due to his large size and the numerous amount of destruction generated by him and the kaiju he fights, he is misinterpreted as a mindless, destructive animal when this is not the case. Despite his short-temperedness, he has a calmer side, as he will leave things in peace as long as nothing disturbs his home. He is also able to distinguish allies from a threat, making it possible to reason with him, albeit briefly and with some difficulty. His unyielding nature initially made him immune to Rita's mind control, allowing him to defy her influence before Rita forced herself into his mind.
Origins[]
The beginnings of this Godzilla are never fleshed out in the series. The only familiar trait is, like in most incarnations, he has a penchant for the destruction of human settlement during his battles against kaiju, although it is unclear whether this is done out of hostility or apathy towards them. It is also unclear whether this version is an adaptation of previous incarnations of Godzilla or a unique version.
History[]
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers[]
After Rita Repulsa obtains an artifact called the Multiversal Focus, she uses it to find worlds without Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for her to conquer. Finding one such reality, she teleports herself and her Evil Space Aliens to the Angel Grove of Godzilla's dimension right in the middle of a fight between Godzilla and Megalon being overseen by the Xiliens. Rita watches as Godzilla overpowers Megalon, admiring the kaiju's power and destruction. Godzilla prepares to leave when a lone ranger, Tommy Oliver, confronts Godzilla with the Dragonzord under he belief that the monster was attacking the city. In the Xilien ship, Rita tries to control Godzilla but he stubbornly resists it while the Dragonzord fights the kaiju, with both serving only to anger Godzilla further. Eventually, Godzilla hits the Dragonzord with his atomic breath before grabbing and ripping it apart, when the other Power Rangers then arrive and summon their Dinozords.[1]
As the Dinozords face Godzilla, Billy warns the others that Godzilla is stronger than any of Rita's monsters and they to form the Megazord. Although Godzilla initially holds the higher ground, the Megazord manages to pierce him through the heart with the Power Sword while Godzilla fires atomic breath at it, which knocks them both down. The Xiliens then attempt to attack the incapacitated fighters, but Godzilla awakens to swat the ships away and successfully retreats to the ocean to recover.[2]
Godzilla eventually re-emerges from the ocean during Gigan, Eye Guy, and Rhinoblaster's battle with the Power Rangers, where he attacks both Rita's forces and the Power Rangers since they all threaten the Earth. However, Godzilla is unable to take on all three of the monsters in his weakened state. The Rangers use the Power Sword to revitalize Godzilla and heal him. This helps Godzilla realize the Rangers are trying to help him and they team up against the monsters, with Godzilla setting Eye Guy ablaze and forcing Gigan to flee. Before the Rangers can assess whether Godzilla still trusts them, they are attacked from surprise by a giant Scorpina who is with Kamacuras, Kumonga, and Megaguirus.[3]
Godzilla assists the Megazord in fending off the monster arthropods, with him squishing Kumonga with his tail. However, Rita then takes over the Xilien ship and has Finster summon King Ghidorah to battle. The alien kaiju immediately blasts Godzilla away with his gravity beams, fortunately the Megazord steps in to shield Godzilla from a second blast. As Godzilla is getting up, Ghidorah carries the Megazord and drops it into the ocean, though Godzilla fires a direct hit at Ghidorah, causing him to also fall in the water, as Godzilla rushes in and tackles him. However, Ghidorah soon entangles Godzilla with his heads and starts draining him of energy. Fully powered, Ghidorah begins attacking Godzilla, the Megazord, and the Xilien ship, first damaging the weakened duo before setting his sights on the Xiliens.[4]
During the battle between Rita's monsters and the rogue Ghidorah, after the Megazord and Dragonzord rejoin the fight, Godzilla rises from the ocean behind Ghidorah and pulls the dragon underwater to take the fight below the surface. As soon as the two re-emerge moments later, the zords combine into the Mega Dragonzord and fires right at Ghidorah. Together, Godzilla and the Megazord then both blast Ghidorah at once, weakening him for Godzilla to slams the dragon to the ground unconscious. With Ghidorah defeated, Godzilla turns his attention to the Xilien starship, and fires at it and causing the ship to plummet before he attacks the Megazord again, still seeing it as a threat. Right as the Megazord engages the kaiju, Zordon informs them that Tommy has been rescued, so the Rangers withdraw from the challenge and teleport home. With the Megazord gone, Godzilla the detects the remnants of the Xilien ship nearby, and fires at the wreckage with the Xiliens still inside, decimating the invaders as he roars victorious.[5]
Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers II[]
To be added
Abilities[]
Bio-atomic nature[]
Godzilla's physiology naturally feeds on radiation, allowing him to absorb and emit radiation as attacks. The radiation also gives off heat intense enough to melt through the Dinozords' shields.
Atomic breath[]
As Godzilla's signature ability, he can fire a stream of neon blue fiery radioactive vapor from his mouth to his target, vaporizing them with ease. He used this to defeat King Ghidorah and later incapacitate the Dragonzord, as well as force Mecha Gigan flying with one hit.
Amphibiousness[]
Godzilla can swim and naturally breathe underwater.
Strength and combat[]
Godzilla is a powerful kaiju, being physically stronger than Eye Guy, the Rhinoblaster, or the Megazord. He was able to hold the Dragonzord over his head before ripping it in half. Godzilla's claws can also serve as bladed weapons to slash his enemies with, while his tail can be used as a weighted swing or lash. However, King Ghidorah and Mechagodzilla were able to rival him in strength and defeat him.
Durability[]
Godzilla's scaly hide grants him increased durability, leaving him unfazed by Megalon's fire breath. He even sustained no injury from persistent slashes from the Dragonzord and then taking on an entire array of missiles completely unaffected.
Healing factor[]
Godzilla can rapidly heal his body from damage and injuries, accomplishing this by allowing himself to recover naturally or by absorbing energy. However, doing so by the former takes a significant duration, and he cannot heal as fast if he is fighting while in recovery.
Energy absorption[]
Godzilla can absorb electricity to regain his full strength, as seen when he absorbed the Power Sword's energy to energize himself.[3]
Zord compatibility[]
Godzilla was zord-compatible with the Mega Dragonzord, which, when fused, granted him the armor and abilities of the Dragonzord. However, Godzilla's defiant nature made it very difficult for him and Tommy to cooperate, with Tommy described it as riding a bucking bronco.[6] With the help of Goro Ibuki and the Elias, in response to Godzilla's energy fusing with his, Tommy likewise gained a new "Kaiju Ranger" form as the Godzilla Ranger, with his new zord remorphing into a "Godzilla Kaiju Zord".[7][8]
Weaknesses[]
Gravity beams[]
Although Godzilla is able to absorb energy, the same does not apply for the gravity-based powers of King Ghidorah, which left him vulnerable to the kaiju's attacks.[4]
Trivia[]
- This is the second time Godzilla has crosed sover over with the Power Rangers and their Super Sentai counterparts. The first time was in 1996, when Godzilla was featured with Gekiso Sentai Carranger, as well as the three Ultra Brothers and three Kamen Riders, in the Children's Day stage show Hero Fest.
- The design of Godzilla resembling the Heisei incarnation may have been influenced by the time period in which the Heisei films aired being around the same time the original 1993 run of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was airing.
- Although it is unknown if this Godzilla is meant to be a variant of a previous incarnation, it is possible that he hails from the same overall multiverse as the films: at the end of the fifth issue of the first series, a view of the multiverse features three other incarnations of Godzilla based on the ones from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla,Godzilla 2000 and/or Godzilla vs. Megaguiris, and Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.
