Godzilla of the Kai-Sei era is a reptilian daikaiju created by IDW Publishing and the main antagonist of the Kai-Sei era Godzilla comic series. Once a wild beast hibernating in the Earth, Godzilla was mutated by the mysterious "kai-sei" energy, transforming it into a vicious kaiju and became a persistent threat to humanity for decades to come, reducing the Earth to a radioactive wasteland.
Name[]
Godzilla's name within the comic series follows the convention of that of the Showa era Godzilla, being a transliteration of Gojira (ゴジラ?), a combination of two Japanese words: "gorira" (ゴリラ?), meaning gorilla, and "kujira" (鯨 or クジラ?), meaning whale.
Design[]
Development[]
Like the Godzilla of the previous IDW continuity, this Godzilla is wholly unique to the Kai-Sei era of the IDW comic series, and has no ties to previous versions of the character.[1]
For the new look of the King of the Monsters, artist Nikola Čižmešija, with assistance from Pablo Tunica, used Godzilla's iconic look as a basis and modified it to look more dangerous and impersonal, with pupil-less eyes to portray it as a giant weapon of destruction.[2] According to editor Jake Williams, the design was intended to be terrifying and is the biggest visual update to Godzilla from IDW's library in order to help make it unique in the Godzilla canon.[3]
The choice to make its atomic breath green was to distinguish it from the blue and magenta colors used by previous versions.[2]
Appearance[]
Incorporating elements of various iterations of the character, this Godzilla has the overall shape of the Heisei incarnation as a bipedal reptilian monster with charcoal-gray scales and a long tail. On his back are enormous shard-like dorsal plates resembling the ones of the 2023 version, but closer to the shape of lightning bolts, and are a solid neon green. The skin texture of this Godzilla has rock-like cracks, except for its the underside of its body which is smooth like graphite, while the region around its head and shoulders have pebbles bumps. In addition to this are several rows of osteoderm spines jutting out from the back of its head and around the brows of its eyes. Godzilla's jaw is rounded proportionate to the rest of its head, similar to the MonsterVerse and GEMSTONE incarnations, except it has a subtle overbite while the lower jaw features ridges and grooves. Furthermore, its incisors and canine teeth appear to be growing on the outside of its mouth. Its eyes are amber and pupilless like the Godzilla from Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. Godzilla's most striking feature are the thick, pulsating veins around its body that emit a neon green glow, indicative of the kai-sei energy in its system. When it charges up, the plates and veins on its body light up as it unleashes its atomic breath.
Origins[]
Like the Showa and Heisei eras, Godzilla began as an ordinary creature slumbering beneath the Earth. In 1954, when American were prforming tests with a new form of energy known as "kai-sei", this unintentionally awakened the creature and exposed it to radiation from the kai-sei energy. As a result, its biology was changed and it gained radioactive physiology.[1]
Personality[]
According to writer Tim Seeley, this incarnation of Godzilla will take most of its inspiration from the original 1954 film, being a defender of Earth, albeit against humans. It takes out its vengeance upon humanity for their reckless attacking and disturbance of the planet.[4]

Trivia[]
- According to Seeley, the Godzilla of the Kai-Sei era is referred to with the pronoun "it",[5] which may imply its gender is unknown or has none.
- Unlike most incarnations, this Godzilla's radioactive energy will be green due to the kai-sei energy. This makes it the second Godzilla to possess green atomic breath, following Godzilla from Godzilla: The Series.
- On the cover of Godzilla: The New Heroes, Godzilla sports a different design than its canon appearance. According to Williams, the design that appears on the cover of the one-shot is not the official version and was made by artist Oliver Ono as a placeholder based on a more classic Godzilla.[3]
