Godzilla Rivals is a quarterly comic book series IDW Publishing. The series draws from the characters in the Godzilla franchise, with each issue a one-shot comic featuring Godzilla or another monster battling each other; sometimes only one monster is featured as the story's main focus. The first installment of the series was released on June 30, 2021.

Synopsis[]

Epic monster battles featuring some of Godzilla's fiercest rivals: Hedorah, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Battra! Each story is an all-out, knockdown Kaiju brawl. First, Godzilla and Hedorah smash their way through New York City while the search for the only scientist who can stop the chaos goes on in the streets below. Then, Mothra, the ancient and beautiful guardian of nature and humanity, is trapped in Lake Ikeda, but when one Kaiju awakens, Godzilla is close behind. When Mars invades Earth, Godzilla surfaces from Tokyo Bay and is pulled into battle with the flying saucers. Captured and taken by the Martians, Godzilla is forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena, where the King of the Monsters faces its biggest challenge yet: King Ghidorah. In the finale, at a quiet beachside town ravaged by constant sewage spillages and toxic waste dumps, something is stirring. Deep under the rolling hills that surround Hackney-on-Sea, Battra is awakening, driven by a single goal: to destroy mankind and save planet Earth.By an exciting mix of creators including Paul Allor, E.J. Su, Mary Kenney, SL Gallant, Adam Gorham, Rosie Knight, and Oliver Ono.
― Volume 1
Step into the arena as Godzilla's most dangerous allies and scariest nemeses square off in a series of sense-shattering showdowns! The world is pretty big. You'd think there'd be enough room for all the kaiju to claim their stomping grounds, but even giant monsters aren't above needing to protect their territory. Godzilla has friends and foes, and in turn, they vie against each other for dominance. In this quartet of standalone stories, different denizens of Monster Island go claw-to-claw for exciting, earth-shaking matchups. Marvel as Biollante throws down with Destroyah! Cheer on Mothra tussling with Titanosaurus! Gasp when Rodan tries to knock out Ebirah! And of course, make some noise for the one true King of Monsters as Godzilla goes after Gigan! The second volume of Godzilla: Rivals continues the kaiju brawl by creators Nick Marino, Sean Dove, Blue Delliquanti, Feriowind, James F. Wright, Phillip Johnson, Keith Davidsen, and SidVenBlu.

Information[]

Rivals consists of self-contained stories with different artists, writers, and colorists, each centering around Godzilla with another monster, a single monster, or two monsters. The series has a quarterly release, publishing four one-shots per year. While some of these stories are retellings of Godzilla films in comic form, other issues tell original stories for the monsters. The first four issues centered on Godzilla fighting the guest monster.

During San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it was announced that the 2023 lineup of one-shots would pair unique kaiju against one another. The 2023 one-shots consisted of Rodan Vs. Ebirah for January and written by James F. Wright and illustrated by Phillip Johnson; Mothra Vs. Titanosaurus, slated for March, was written by Blue Delliquanti and illustrated by Ferio Wind, while Godzilla Rivals: Biollante Vs. Destroyah was slated for May 2023 and written by Nick Marino with art by Sean Dove.[1] The series' first volume, "Godzilla Rivals: Round One", collects issues 1-4, was released on January 2, 2023. The second volume, "Godzilla Rivals: Round Two", collecting issues 5-8, was released on November 8, 2023. The third volume, "Godzilal Rivals: Round Three", collecting issues 9-12, is set to be released on August 20, 2024.[2]
