Godzilla vs. Marvel is an upcoming 2025 one-shot comic book series of published by Marvel Comics in association with Toho Company Ltd., based on the Godzilla series. The series will be a crossover between Godzilla and the Marvel Comics universe and is the second series by Marvel Comics to adapt Godzilla, succeeding the 1977 series Godzilla, King of the Monsters.[1] It is set to be released on March 19, 2025.[2]

Development[]

Prior to 2024, Marvel Comics engaged Toho with talks of borrowing their license for a crossover event for several years. According to Marvel VP of licensing and publishing, Sven Larsen, the two teams eventually agreed to directly collaborate, while the pitches behind the crossovers started to come together and developed into the setup for the series.[3] The decision to reveal the series during 2024 was timed in celebration of Godzilla's 70th anniversary.[3] On December 12, 2024, Marvel announced the series based on the character was in development, following the release of the fascimile edition and reissuing of the 1977 collected editions of its original Godzilla comics.

The lineup included at least six one-shot issues that were in production, with appearances by the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Thor.[3] These issues would tell original stories set across different time periods and eras of Marvel Comics.[1] The one-shot comics will be succeeded by a Godzilla-Marvel limited series set to release during summer 2025.[2]

Its first issue, Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four, was written by Ryan North (author of the Fantastic Four series) and drawn by John Romita Jr. (artist for The Amazing Spider-Man). This story will have the group battle against Galactus and King Ghidorah. The second issue, Godzilla vs. Hulk, is written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Giuseppe Camuncoli.[4] The third issue, Godzilla vs. Spider-Man, is written by Joe Kelly and drawn by Nick Bradshaw.[5] The fourth story, Godzilla vs. X-Men, is written by X-Men and X-Force writer Fabien Nicieza and illustrated by Emilio Laiso (artist for Power Man: Timeless).[6]

Trivia[]

  • The series' stories will take place across certain points of Marvel history,[1] with issues appearing to focus on a specific decade with both franchises. This is indicated by the various incarnations of Godzilla that appear based on the period set in each issue.
    • This is in contrast to the 1977 Marvel Godzilla series, which depicted an ongoing version of Godzilla adapted for the comics, and seems to be unrelated to the miniseries.
    • It is unknown if these stories will be self-contained, intersect, or be set in the events of the current Marvel Comics timeline. It is also unknown if they will be divergent or non-canon to the main Marvel universe.
  • The series marks Godzilla's full reappearance in Marvel Comics since 1979. The character did make a cameo in the first issue of The Mighty Avenges in 2007.
  • The "Monster Homage" variant cover for issue #1 is based on Fantastic Four #1, with Godzilla in place of Giganto.
