All Gojipedia content is edited collaboratively. Gojipedia contributors are editors, not authors, and no one, no matter how skilled, has the right to act as if they are the owner of a particular article. An edit war occurs when editors who disagree about some aspect of the content of a page repeatedly override each other's contributions, rather than try to resolve the disagreement by discussion.
Fighting over the right to edit an article is nonconstructive and creates animosity between editors, making it harder to reach a consensus as to the right way to improve the wiki.
Overview
Some contributors feel possessive about material they have contributed to this project. Some go so far as to defend it against all others. It is one thing to take an interest in an article that you maintain on your watchlist. However, if this watchfulness starts to become possessiveness, then this might be overdoing it. All articles are in free space, and the belief that an article has an owner is a common mistake, and can result in conflict.
- Examples of an edit war
- Article changes by different editors are reverted by the same editor repeatedly over an extended period to protect a certain version, not being from vandalism.
- Reverting new changes in a "we don't need this" attitude.
- An editor disputes minor edits concerning layout, image use, and wording in a particular article daily. The editor might claim the right, whether openly or implicitly, to review any changes before they can be added to the article.
Solution
If edit warring is persisting to a detrimental extent, the page is to be protected from editing until further notice. The users in question are encouraged to reach an agreement via civil discussion. In the event they don't and communication breaks down further, punishment may be enforced. If you wish for people not to edit stuff that you contributed to the wiki, then do not edit
During the time that a page is protected, Bureaucrats and Administrators alike may edit the article to assist in ending the edit war.
