Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse

The Griffon (グリホン,   Gurihon?) of the Planet of the Monsters continuity is a species of giant winged lion-like kaiju created by Toho that first appeared in Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse, a prequel novelization for the 2017 film, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.

History

Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse

In June 2021, a pack of Griffons attacked Cairo in Egypt and brought down the city, further cornering humanity on the African continent after the chaos brought mostly by Megalon.

It was said to be regrettable that United Nation didn't send forces which African nations asked for and had exterminated Griffons at early stage and prevented the monsters from reproducing, or had prevent conflicts among humanity at least.

Ability

Griffons were also to breed.

Humanity had hypothesized that Dagahra and other flying monsters possibility possessed abilities to control gravity due to physical infeasiblity to achieve flights with their masses and weights.

Monsters (possibly all) in this continuity was said to be able to absorb electromagnetic waves, and thus able to make surprise attacks on urban areas.

Trivia

  • Like its predecessor, the orthography of Griffon is Gurihon (グリホン,   Gurihon?) while the actual labeling of Griffon in Japanese is Guriffon (グリフォン,   Guriffon?); this gap was made possibly due to the fact that labeling of foreign words had not been standardized completely in the time when the film Latitude Zero was made.
  • Attacks on northwestern Africa to the Middle East by winged lion-like monsters acts as a potential reference to that of Norzzug in Godzilla: The Series.
