The Kamacuras (カマキラス?) of the KamakirasuAniGoji continuity is a species of giant mantis-like kaiju created by Toho that first appeared in Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse, a prequel novelization for the 2017 film, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters.
Design[]
Appearance[]
The subadult was described to be about a size of a train, with its sickles extending for 2 meters, while possessing a triangular head, profusely large, yellow eyes, while emitting high-pitched sounds that made the inside of a train tremble.
This Kamacuras had asymmetrical sickles like its original predecessor in the 1967 film Son of Godzilla, and unlike in the 2004 film, Godzilla: Final Wars.
History[]
Godzilla: Monster Apocalypse[]
On May 4, 1999, Kamacuras appeared from Upper New York Bay at midnight, then moved northeast, wrecking cities. For the following 72 hours, it caused massive damage on the east coast, trampling around, and creating a swath of destruction around 330km long. It also caused more than 2.5 million casualties. The US force utilized bunker busters against it from B-2 fighters, and defeated the monster near Portsmouth.
Gordon Castle, along with two civilians and policemen, used themselves as decoys to lure the individual which attacked the train they were on down to the East River, to allow other passengers to escape. They succeeded in getting the monster to cut an old pipe meant for heating and trapped the monster, steaming it to death.
It is unclear how many immature individuals had appeared, but Gordon Castle and others indicated that there were many more, possibly reviewing the fact that Kamacuras had been inhabiting North American continent along with Kumonga in 2030s; Akira Sakaki's interview on Gordon was likely in 2040s.
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters[]
Kamacuras was one of few monsters that briefly appeared in the prologue of the film.
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (Manga adaptation)[]
Kamacuras was one of few monsters that briefly appeared as cameo roles.
Abilities[]
An adult was able to cause a havoc on humanity in a rather short period.
Sharp sickles[]
Immature individuals had sickles that were sharp enough to slice metals easily.
Weaknesses[]
Handheld weapons[]
Immature individuals were vulnerable to lower caliber weaponry, including pistols.
Steam[]
It was vulnerable to, and killed by being enclosed in a chamber which was filled with hot steam.
Trivia[]
- The description of the destruction of the World Trade Center by an adult Kamacuras strongly resembles that of September 11 attacks.
