Kong VR: Destination Skull Island is a virtual-reality short film intended for 360 viewing, which serves as an interactive trailer for the film Kong: Skull Island. It shows the arrival to Skull Island as portrayed in the film from the perspective of one of the less fortunate army soldiers. The short was created by Legendary VR, ILMxLabs, and the same VFX team that worked on Kong: Skull Island.

Plot[]

...Remember the story of Icarus, whose father gave him wings made of wax and warned him not to fly too close to the sun. But the United States Army is not an irresponsible father, so they gave us wings of white-hot, cold rolled, Pennsylvania steel! Hold onto your butts!"
Preston Packard to his army squadron

Over the radio, Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) gives orders to his squadron, and warns them with the story of Icarus. A tree is launched from somewhere deep in the forest and strikes the adjacent helicopter, which catches on fire and crashes into the viewer's helicopter. The screen goes black.

After some crashing sounds, the viewer slowly regains consciousness on the ground, inside the destroyed chopper. In the distance, he sees the giant silhouette of Kong tear through the trees and slowly approach. From one of the remaining helicopters, a soldier shoots at Kong with a machine gun, but Kong punches the helicopter and sends it crashing to the ground. Kong notices the viewer's helicopter, picks it up, dangles it above his head, and drops the viewer into his gaping mouth.

Cast[]

  • Samuel L. Jackson as Preston Packard
  • Terry Notary as Kong (motion capture)
  • Toby Kebbell as Kong (facial motion capture)

Trivia[]

  • The line "Hold onto your butts!" is a reference to Samuel L. Jackson's famous quote from the film Jurassic Park.
