Overview

This Kumonga (クモンガ,   Kumonga?) is the first Kumonga of the Singular Point continuity, and the second in the Reiwa era of the franchise as well as being the first Kumonga to appear as a species. They made their debut in the eighth episode of the 2021 Netflix-exclusive animated series, Godzilla Singular Point.

Name[]

The name of Kumonga and its variants, Hanenga (ハネンガ,   Hanenga?), Kamanga (カマキリ?), and Zenbunga, (ゼンブンガ?), incorporate the original monster's name, derived from kumo (クモ?), which is the Japanese word for "spider". In the anime, the species were named by the staff of the factory they invaded.

Kumonga was first revealed on the official website on May 20, 2021.[2] Hanenga and Kamanga were first revealed on the official website on May 27, 2021,[3] with Zenbunga revealed on June 4, 2021.[4]

The basic form of this Kumonga is scientifically known as Kumonga Cytodes (クモンガ・サイトーデス,   Kumonga saitōdesu?), based on a species of spitting spider discovered in 2020, Scytodes kumonga, which, in turn, was named after Kumonga.[5] The word cytodes (kútos) means "hollow vessel" in Ancient Greek, a biological term used to designate non-nucleated protoplasm mass as the simplest form of independent life, referencing Kumonga Cytodes' concealed amoeba form.

Hanenga is the name for Kumonga Aratus (クモンガ・アラートゥス,   Kumonga arātusu?). The name Hanenga comes from Kumonga and hane (羽?), which is the Japanese word for "wing".

Kamanga is the name for Kumonga Falcipes (クモンガ・ファルシペス,   Kumonga farushipesu?). Its surname is derived from the Latin conjunction falcipes, meaning "sickle-foot". The name Kamanga comes from Kumonga and kama (鎌?), which is the Japanese word for "scythe".

Zenbunga is the name for Kumonga Ultima (クモンガ・ウルティマ,   Kumonga urutima?), derived from the Latin word ultimus, meaning "last", similar to Godzilla Ultima. The name Zenbunga comes from Kumonga and zenbu (全部?), which is the Japanese word for "all". Its name, along with its scientific name, references this Kumonga type as a combination of the other types and making it the strongest of its kind.

Design[]

Appearance[]

The Kumongas resembles a cross between their namesake and Megalon, with long sharp legs and what looks like Megalon's horn at the tip of their abdomens. They are dark green in color as well as having yellow stripes. The Kumongas also have four small blue eyes on their head as well as two larger eyes on the sides of their head with two small antennae on top of them. Their body is very similar to Kumonga while their front legs resemble Megalon's drill hands.

Two related forms of Kumonga, Hanenga, and Kamanga, resemble Kumonga with unique physical attributes.

Hanenga possess wings that allow them to fly.

Kamangas lack the horn of Kumongas, replaced with what looks like a sharp stinger at the tip of their abdomens. Their front legs resemble Gigan's blade hands and Kamacuras' raptorial arms. They also appear as much larger than the Kumongas and have three large spikes on their backs.

Zenbunga has all the properties of its counterparts, including the wings of Hanenga and the blades of Kamanga.

Despite their resemblance to spiders, when they are greatly wounded, Kumongas release what is apparently their true forms, a blue amoeba-like form that greatly resembles Hedorah with several tendrils and two large yellow eyes.

Origins[]

The Kumongas' origins are unknown, apparently being not native to Earth. They are a species, and come in four known subspecies with a different attribute, living together in a communal nest made from their webbing. It is implied that the Kumongas nesting near Nigashio City were carried there by a Manda, judging from the Manda carcass's hollowed remains that were found on the beach.

History[]

Godzilla Singular Point[]

Graftage[]

The Kumongas first appeared after the crew of Otaki Factory and Jet Jaguar went to investigate what appeared to be a massive spiderweb covering a boathouse not far from where they previously saw the beached corpse of a Manda that had been killed by Godzilla. Three Kumongas attacked the group shortly after they arrived at the boathouse. While they possessed an advantage with numbers and size, Jet Jaguar was able to dispatch them with the Anguirus Spear, giving the group time to escape. Following this, the group realized that one of them, an employee working at the boathouse, had disappeared while they escaped. Believing he had been captured and taken to the Kumongas' nest, Jet Jaguar was sent to investigate. After scanning the interior of the boathouse, Jet Jaguar discovered there were more than twenty more Kumongas inside. Just then, the Kumongas that the mech had defeated earlier returned, reanimated by their amoebic true forms, and the others inside the boathouse made their presence known, their eyes glowing in the dark.

Erumpent[]

While the group hid inside of the boathouse's office, where the other two employees were hiding, Jet Jaguar continued to fight the Kumongas while police reinforcements were called. Upon their arrival, they saw the dismembered parts of the first three Kumongas writhing on the ground, shocked to see they were still alive. Shortly afterwards, a swarm of Hanenga and Kamanga emerged from the boathouse, attacking and presumably killing the officers. Deciding they need to get to one of the boats, Goro Otaki and Haberu Kato leave the office to rescue the captured employee, who possessed a key to a boat, while Jet Jaguar continued to battle the Kumongas and keep them away from the group while they escaped. While they managed to reach the boat and begin making their escape, the boathouse was set on fire while Jet Jaguar moved to the roof, encountering Hanengas, Kamangas, and Zenbungas as it continued its battle. When Jet Jaguar's battery pack began running critically low, it engaged an emergency protocol, ejecting the pack and continuing its assault in the Kumongas with increased speed and agility now that its battery pack wasn't weighing it down, before jumping into the water and grabbing onto the boat before shutting down. The Kumongas watched from the burning docks as the boat sped away and made its way towards Tokyo. Their current status is unknown.

Abilities[]

Flight[]

The Hanenga are seen flying around their nest when it caught on fire.

Speed and agility[]

Kumongas are extremely agile, shown when Jet Jaguar tried to attack them only for them to speed out of the way and attack him from all angles.

Strength and combat[]

Kumongas can use the sharp tips of their legs to stab their prey as well as their foes. They were also shown to have sufficient strength, as they could pounce on Jet Jaguar and temporarily knock him down. The Kamangas can use their enlarged forearms as defense against enemy damage, or execute slicing attacks.

Regeneration[]

When incapacitated, the Kumongas release their true forms, which will then use their bodies to take control.

Webbing[]

Kumongas were shown to have spin webs at a destroyed apartment.

Trivia[]

  • This version of Kumonga appears to be a hybrid of previous kaiju; not only resembling a cross between Kumonga, Megalon, Gigan, and Kamacuras, they share behavioral patterns more akin to Meganulons, and their internal forms strongly resemble Hedorah colored like Yog or Dogora.
