Leviathan, also dubbed Titanus Leviathan, is a giant aquatic Titan in the MonsterVerse created by Legendary Pictures who was introduced in the 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as a name appearing on a monitor, and it is briefly mentioned in Godzilla: King of the Monsters - The Official Movie Novelization.
Name[]
The "Leviathan" likely refers to the Biblical use, in which the Leviathan is a giant sea creature created by God, usually described as a serpentine crocodile or a whale. This creature is the counterpart to the Behemoth. Leviathan's name may also refer to the definitions of "leviathan", either a massive aquatic creature or something very large and powerful. Some myths refer to Leviathan as a male, while others refer to it as a female.
Leviathan's other name, Nessie, is an aquatic serpentine cryptid that has been sighted in Loch Ness, Scotland, since 7th century AD.
History[]
Skull Island[]
A photograph of the Loch Ness Monster can be seen on the interior of the Once in a Maritime, a ship staffed by cryptid enthusiasts. It is based on the 1934 "Surgeon's Photograph".
Godzilla: King of the Monsters[]
Leviathan was found in Loch Ness, Scotland, by Monarch, and Outpost 49 was built around it. When Ghidorah calls all the Titans, Leviathan breaks free and begins to hunt with its new pack. When the ORCA calls all Titans to Boston, Leviathan does not arrive in time for the battle and does not see Godzilla become the alpha of all Titans again.
Trivia[]
- The outpost Leviathan was contained in, Monarch Outpost 49, is a possible reference to the 1949 Argosy Pictures film Mighty Joe Young.
- Leviathan can travel in and out of Loch Ness with the use of Hollow Earth tunnels.
- Coincidentally, it is believed by many Loch Ness Monster theorists that there are tunnels under Loch Ness connecting it to the sea.
- Leviathan's presence in Loch Ness is a subtle reference to Nessie in Godzilla: The Series.
