This is a list of known monsters from unproduced media projects and abandoned concepts from completed works in the Godzilla franchise. As many were created during pre-production and early drafts, these monster may have had a small role, a brief cameo, and/or existed only as a design or concept. This list is organized by the medium they appeared in and in alphabetical order. Films that were never made are denoted with an asterisk (*).
Note that this excludes those that were integrated into the franchise much later, such as Bagan. The list is meant to be comprehensive, however, given the obscure subject matter, it may be incomplete.
Films and television[]
Showa era[]
- Giant Archaeopteryx and Giant Chameleon: Monsters created for the 1956 film Bride of Godzilla. They, along with Godzilla and Anguirus, came from the center of the "Hollow Earth" and attacked Kyushu. They are all ultimately defeated by Robot Daughter. The Giant Archaeopteryx was possibly a predecessor to Rodan, as Bride of Godzilla was planned to be released the same year as Rodan, and some early concept art of Rodan depicts him as more like an Archaeopteryx than a Pteranodon.

- Biollante: Named after the plant monster Biollante from Godzilla vs. Biollante, this monster is shown to have tentacle/vine like appendages and a small head crest. It appeared on one page of concept art.
- Flying Gigan: An homage to the cyborg monster Gigan from Godzilla vs. Gigan, the Flying Gigan is a bat-like creature. It is featured in the opening sequence of the show where it is shown doing battle with Godzilla. It was also featured on a piece of promotional art for the series, battling Godzilla underwater.
- Gabara: Named after the monster Gabara from All Monsters Attack, this monster has very few discernible features aside from its double-mouth and eight eyes. It appeared on one page of concept art.
- Gus the Spider: Gus appears at the end of the opening sequence to Godzilla: The Series. Its most notable feature is its extremely large mandibles, it is reddish, has a stinger on the back of its body and its legs appear to be hollow. The Giant Black Widow in the show was based on Gus' design.
- Manda the Worm: Named after the serpent monster Manda from Atragon, this creature has an elongated body that appears to be multisegmented, is green in color, has a mouth with large teeth, lacks visible eyes, has small horns, and has small legs that run through its entire body. This monster appears at the end of the opening sequence.
- Megalon: An homage to the insectoid monster Megalon from Godzilla vs. Megalon, this monster appears at the end of the opening sequence. This creature has large horns, spider-like mandibles and an armored back. It also has very skinny arms compared to its bulky body and tentacle-like hands.
- Moguera: Named after the mole-like robot Moguera from The Mysterians, both organic and mechanical versions of this monster appear in concept art. This art suggests that Moguera was meant to fight Godzilla and be defeated, only to be resurrected using robotics.
- Bird of Prey: This creature was originally meant to be in the episode "Wedding Bells Blew". However, due to the amount of bird-like monsters already in the series, the Bird of Prey was replaced with the Sub-Zero Manta. In the Japanese version of the show, the Giant Manta Ray is still referred to as the Bird-Of-Prey.
- Female Godzilla: A female Godzilla was originally meant to be in the episode "End of the Line." However, the show's producers didn't feel the need for another Godzilla in the series, so they replaced the female Godzilla with the giant Komodo dragon monster, Komodithrax.

According to Adam Wingard, the crew had always planned to use Mothra. While Phosphera's character was written based around Mothra, Wingard stated it would have been disappointing to have a creature that did everything Mothra did but would have still been another creature and not Mothra herself, citing "If you look at the very first draft of the script, it always says Mothra."[2]

A few years back, when IDW was still producing new Godzilla comics, I began talking to comic book superstar John Layman about making a follow-up to his mini-series, Godzilla: Gangsters and Goliaths, tentatively titled "Lolitas and Leviathans"! It would be akin to the film KAMIKAZE GIRLS, with goth lolitas teaming up with "sukeban" or delinquent girls, who uncover an alien invasion plot that leads to a rematch between Godzilla and Space Godzilla. Unfortunately we never got it off the ground and IDW lost the license after a certain point. C'est la vie, at least it's a cool idea! Hopefully John and I will get to properly collaborate one day!.
