Mothra Gemini[1] of the Queen of the Monsters continuity is a divine moth kaiju who is set to debut in the 2025 IDW Publishing comic series Mothra: Queen of the Monsters. Born in the Jurassic period to succeed the late Mothra, Mothra Gemini travels through time to aid the mystic twins Emi and Mira in saving their future from a new and terrifying monster threat.

Name[]

Her name comes from "Mothra" and gemini, the Latin word for "twins", as well as the name of an astrological constellation represented by the twins Castor and Pollux. This is intended to be an allusion to the Shobijin, who are twins.[2]

Mothra's name was first revealed by Matt Frank on his social media after the comic was announced,[1] who confirmed the name was given to her by both him and writer Sophie Campbell.

Design[]

Development[]

Mothra Gemini was pitched and sketched by Campbell as a new version of Mothra.[3] Her concept was based on fan redesigns of the Mothra character by Campbell and Matt Frank made years prior. Campbell's design drew from cats, and favoring this rendition, Frank based Gemini's design on hers and tweaked it to better fit the concept, taking inspiration from the classic Showa version and Mothra Leo from Rebirth of Mothra to outline her wings.[2][3]

Appearance[]

In her imago form, Mothra Gemini greatly resembles a mixture between Mothra Leo and various incarnations of the Mothra character. Like her predecessor, the original Mothra, she is a white lepidopteran kaiju with bird-like taloned feet. Unique to this version is that she appears heavier and fluffier than previous incarnations, being coated in extremely thick orange-and-white fur with sections of black fur forming a mane around her neck, along with enlarged legs and an abdomen. She has large multicolored wings that feature jagged stripes of red, orange, yellow, and black. The trim of the forewings have a strip of yelow-and-black-striped fur, with the eye markings in an inverted direction from their standard colors, while her hindwings are red with a prominent spiral on each. Her head has large blue almond-shaped eyes, similar to Leo and the MonsterVerse incarnation, but with black eyelash-esque lining around them, feathery antennae, and purple mandibles with small white oral pincers.

Her larva form is more caterpillar-like than previous incarnations: instead of appearing as a segmented brown worm, Mothra Gemini is a bulbous caterpillar, with yellow skin that has orange spots on it and a beige underside. She has large black eyes, small antennae with light green tips and small brown pincers around her mouth. Her legs are also visible with small clawed tips.

Trivia[]

  • Mothra Gemini is the first original design of a Toho monster to be created for an IDW Godzilla series.
  • Mothra Gemini's background and name are similar to Mothra Leo. Like Leo, Mothra Gemini is named after a sign from the astrological zodiac and is a successor after the death of the previous Mothra.
    • According to Matt Frank, Mothra was originally going to be called "Mothra Virgo" or "Mothra Libra" in reference to other zodiac constellations, before it was decided to base her on the twin zodiac to reference the Shobijin.[2]
  • Interestingly, despite being female, Mothra Gemini possesses feathery antennae, a trait that is characteristic of male moths in real life.
