The creatures originally had no official name or designation. They have been called "gremlins" and "goblins" by Sam. The series' official soundtrack also refers to them as "gremlins". Concept art and renders refer to them as "Nightboys",[2] which was later confirmed to be their name in the Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure creature codex.[1]
Design[]
Appearance[]
In terms of general appearance, Nightboys are semi-quadrupedal in posture with gray skin, four clawed limbs, a long thin tail, and large black spikes growing from their backs. The creatures' most notable feature is their heads, which contain a maw of massive fangs supported by a pair of knife-like mandibles. The lower jaw lacks any teeth and is instead hooked upwards. The creatures have four yellow eyes that lack pupils, along with crest-like growths atop their skulls. When dormant, they lay flat on the trunks of dead trees on Skull Island.
Roar[]
The creatures make high-pitched chirps, clicks, and screeches.
Personality[]
Nightboys are aggressive creatures that will relentlessly pursue anything that disturbs them from their slumber. The creatures will bundle together in large numbers on the husks of dead trees, with their spiked backs facing outwards. This is done presumably as a way of obtaining shelter and safety from larger predators. Their pack behavior strongly implies that the Nightboys are a social species.
While planning to distract Irene's team to rescue Annie, Mike and his dad, Charlie, accompanied by Dog, tried to burn down a tree and call their attention, but unknowingly to him, there was a group of Nightboys sleeping around it. The plan failed and the Nightboys started to attack the group, but were eventually fended off.
Abilities[]
Camouflage[]
Like many of Skull Island's fauna, the Nightboys make use of specially-adapted camouflage in order to blend in with the island's flora. To protect themselves as they sleep, the creatures sleep with their spiked backs pointed outwards.
Jaws[]
The main weapon of the Nightboys is their jaws, which are an amalgamation of fangs, knife-like mandibles, and a hooked beak.
Strength and combat[]
Individually, the creatures possess the physical strength to tackle and topple humans over, but can be overpowered by those with sufficient training and survival experience.
