Overview

Quetzalcoatl, also dubbed Titanus Quetzalcoatl, is a giant daikaiju created by Legendary Pictures that appears in Legendary's 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as a carving in the film's opening sequence and later as a name briefly seen on a monitor.

Name[]

"Quetzalcoatl" roughly translates to "Precious Serpent" or "Quetzal-feathered Serpent" in the Nahuatl language.

Design[]

Appearance[]

Though Quetzalcoatl is not physically seen in the film, an ancient carving of the Titan can be seen during the opening credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.[1] In this carving, Quetzalcoatl appears to be an avian-like creature that stands on two grasping talons and has a long serpentine body ending in a long saurian tail. His head is adorned with horns that sweep backwards and a long streamlined beak. He has two large feathery wings both with a partially detached thumb (similar to bats). In the carving, Quetzalcoatl is covered in various grooves which are presumably his feathers and/or scutes.[2]

History[]

Godzilla: King of the Monsters[]

At some point, Monarch had discovered Quetzalcoatl hibernating in Machu Picchu, Peru, and subsequently built Outpost 57 around him. When Ghidorah calls upon all the Titans, Quetzalcoatl breaks free and begins to hunt with his new pack. When the ORCA calls all Titans to Boston, Quetzalcoatl does not arrive in time for the battle and does not see Godzilla become the alpha of all Titans again (except Kong).

Trivia[]

  • The outpost Quetzalcoatl was contained in, Monarch Outpost 57, is a possible reference to the 1957 Toho film The Mysterians.
  • While Quetzalcoatl in the MonsterVerse shares the same name as the Quetzalcoatl in Godzilla: The Series, the latter is more similar to the MonsterVerse Rodan in terms of characteristics and background.
  • With the reference to Quetzalcoatl from Godzilla: The Series, many fans mistake Quetzalcoatl as a female. But since most of the Titans' genders fit their original myths, Quetzalcoatl is most likely a male.
