The creature originally had no official name or designation, and its production name was "Rock Bug" in the artists' design sheets. The 2025 creature codex for Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure revealed this was indeed its name.

Appearance[]
The true appearance of a Rock Bug that of an isopod-like insect with a craggly rock hide resembling those of geodes. This hide is a camouflage mechanism, where the rock can be split in half to reveal a glittering interior designed to fascinate prey into looking inside and into the Rock Bug's jaws.

Once Cap arrives on Skull Island, he notices a giant, blue, shiny rock starting to move on it's on, it soon opens itself revealing many shiny crytals in it's insides that were more than enough to amaze the monster hunter, right before noticing the giant drooling Rock Bug staring down at him. Cap is luckily saved by a member of Irene's tripulation that shot in the giant insect's face, it changed it's attention from Cap to the shooter, rapidly dodging his bullets and devouring the man alive, leaving Cap along after feeding.
Meanwhile in Skull Island's shores, Mike and Charlie were taking cover from the Trapdoor Crabs on top of a rock, Mike eventually picked a random rock in the sand and was surprised to find out it was actually an infant Rock Bug, due to it, he threw it away and over to the Crabs, that started quickly trying to capture it, but ultimately failed.
During the battle between Kong and Kraken, Kong picked up a rock from the bottom of the sea and threw it at the Kraken, while flying at it, the rock revealed to be a Rock Bug right before it was sliced into pieces by one of the Kraken's red tentacles, killing it instantly.
