Rodan (ラドン?) of the Legends continuity is a giant Radonpteranodon kaiju that appeared in the IDW comic series Godzilla: Legends as the protagonist of the second issue.
Name[]
Name[]
Rodan's Japanese name, "Radon," is a contraction of "pteranodon" and may also have been chosen to suggest radiation.
Design[]
Appearance[]
Rodan resembles its depiction in the Heisei era film Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II.
Roar[]
Rodan's roars are written as "Skreeee" to evoke high-pitched avian sounds.
Personality[]
Rodan is portrayed as a fiercely protective and familial kaiju, having pursued its lost egg after it was stolen, but also caused excessive collateral damage to the city once it arrived. Rodan was also relentless in retrieving the egg, as it continued soaring over the military base where it was kept, albeit at a safe distance. While it is very destructive at times, Rodan's parental instincts come first, where it was quick to calm down upon its offspring hatching and flew off with its child to bring it somewhere safe.
Origins[]
History[]
In 2007, Rodan's egg was stolen by Lance Corporal Graves in the Kuju Mountains. Tailing the culprit, Rodan followed him to Okinawa at customs, and during Rodan's rampage, a scientist and a couple of soldiers escaped with the egg while Rodan was distracted killing Graves. Rodan continued to fly over the military base housing its egg for the next four years without approaching further, due to the armed personnel surrounding. The scientist, Dr. Holder, kept the egg monitored with the intention of studying it for more information on the species, until his employers decided to dispose of the egg. To save it, Dr. Holder and his son, Ethan, broke into the facility and retrieved the egg. However, Ethan, having plans to reunite the egg with its parent, brought the egg to school in order to summon Rodan. The military subsequently arrived to reclaim the egg, but Rodan, having already sensed it, appeared as well. Rodan defended itself from bombardment by the tanks until the egg suddenly started hatching and an infant Rodan peeped out. Mollified by the infant, Rodan ceased attacking and took off with its offspring—with Ethan riding on its back in tow—to find a new home.
Abilities[]
Durability[]
Rodan was able to endure several missiles and rockets shot from the U.S. tanks; Rodan did show some reaction to the bombardment, but not enough to indicate that it was in pain or showed damage.
Flight speed[]
Rodan has massive wings that it uses to soar and reach jet-like speeds. It is capable of moving so fast when flying that it creates destructive shockwaves in its wake, which it has used to raze Okinawa. In addition, Rodan can cause powerful winds while on the ground by simply flapping its wings.
Trivia[]
- There is ambiguity regarding the gender of this Rodan; due to the fact Rodan was caring for an egg, the story never confirms whether Rodan is male or female. In addition, the way Rodan picked it up with its beak is not unlike the method most female mammals and some reptiles do when carrying their offspring. This may suggest that this incarnation of Rodan is female, although it is unknown if this is the case.
