The SoshingekiAngira (総進撃アンギラ?) is the Anguirus suit design used in the 1968, 1972, 1973, and 1974 Godzilla films, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
Name
In Destroy All Monsters, the SoshingekiAngira's name comes from the film's Japanese title, specifically sōshingeki (総進撃?), meaning attack of the marching [monsters], and Angira, which comes from Anguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス?).
In Godzilla vs. Gigan, the GiganAngira's name comes from another kaiju's name, Gigan (ガイガン?), and Angira, which comes from GaiganAnguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス?).
In Godzilla vs. Megalon, the MegaroAngira's name comes from another kaiju's name, Megalon (メガロ?), and Angira, which comes from MegaroAnguirus' Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス?)
In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the MekaAngira's name comes from another kaiju's name, Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ?), and Angira, which comes from MekagojiraAnguirus's Japanese name, Angirasu (アンギラス?).
Detail
Compared to the previous Anguirus design, the SoshingekiAngira suit has a wider, more muscular neck. The eyes are larger, giving Anguirus a more heroic appearance, just like the Godzilla it appeared alongside. Except for a pair of fangs, its teeth are shorter than its predecessor's. The carapace, which no longer moves independently of the rest of the suit, is lined with uneven rows of spikes.
This suit was also used for Anguirus' brief appearance in the opening of Godzilla vs. Megalon. The suit's fangs were removed for its appearance in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. This suit is also known as the GiganAngira (ガイガンアンギラ?) in Godzilla vs. Gigan, the MegaroAngira (メガロアンギラ?) in Godzilla vs. Megalon, and the MekaAngira (メカアンギラ?) in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
Trivia
- This design for Anguirus is very popular with fans of the series, and it is the design which is most commonly used to represent Anguirus in video games and toys.
