Overview

"Terrifying Miracles" is the sixth episode of the first season of the MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Synopsis[]

Shaw finds an unlikely ally with Monarch as the team has a harrowing run-in. Keiko and Lee grow closer while at a military ball.

Plot[]

1955
Washington D.C.
American Defense Industry Federation Ball
Bali Hai

A ball is in full swing. Lee takes a drink from a waiter and then sees Keiko arrive in a beautiful dress. He gives her a flower, but she's unhappy about being at the ball. He gets her to focus on the task and gives her a drink. It isn't long before a drunk General Puckett sings Lee's praises to others in attendance. Lee introduces Keiko to the soldiers, who judge her for being Japanese. Puckett calls her "one of the good ones."

Lee finds Keiko later, and she's upset over Puckett's comments. They talk about the old-fashioned mindsets of others. He knows she'll change their minds because that's who she is. He invites her to dance with him. People stare at them which gives her pause, but he just keeps dancing with her. After dancing, Lee and Keiko talk on a balcony as he discusses a potential future life in a military career. Both of their imagined futures include kids. They flirt and wait together for an elevator when he gets an urgent message from Bill Randa.

Lee is in transport by Monarch when their van stops unexpectedly, courtesy of Duvall. She speaks to him covertly in French and then takes out the operatives. She frees him from the restraints. She knows another emergence is coming and wants to know he knows more than the finest scientists on the planet. He's been telling Monarch things for years, but they don't believe it because he's crazy. Anyone who disagrees with Monarch ends up being called crazy. He asks where she stands. Her sister Sandra worked in Japan during Janjira. She meant it when she joined Monarch to ensure "never again." She thinks he can lead her and the others who believe that.

1955
Monarch Headquarters

Keiko and Lee arrive at Monarch Headquarters. Bill is waiting with readings that are off the charts. She's only ever seen signatures like this in the Philippines and the wreck of the Lawton. They need to get to Japan. Lee reminds them of the budget proposition coming up. Keiko suggests they split up, but he doesn't want to let her go alone. Bill reminds Lee they must prove Titans exist to get money and money to prove Titans exist. Which means something has to give.

Fema Housing

Kentaro, Cate, and May discuss their plan to follow Hiroshi's trail to the desert. They come home to find Lee and Duvall waiting. Cate worries about her mom, but Lee assures her that Caroline is fine. Duvall is working for them now because G-Day times a hundred, or a thousand, is coming soon. He thinks Hiroshi knows how to stop it, and Lee has a pretty good idea of how he plans to do that. The kids are reluctant to work with Duvall, but Lee convinces them to give her a chance. After all, Duvall can give them a ride to wherever Hiroshi is.

Downtown San Francisco
Red Zone

Tim and Verdugo talk in Hiroshi's office. They try to figure out why the kids were there and what they were looking for. Tim figures out that the pin holes on the wall are a pattern for a map. He asks Verdugo what Hiroshi did to get exiled. She denies it at first, then reveals Hiroshi retargeted deep-space satellites to look at things they weren't supposed to be looking at. He wanted them to look at Earth's gamma rays instead of space. Tim remembers that Barnes found gamma rays coming from Earth. Tim reconstructs the map and explains its meaning to Verdugo. He figures out they're looking for Hiroshi. She calls Collins in data culling.

1955
Hateruma Island

Keiko and Bill find Dr. Suzuki who didn't know they were coming because everyone was too afraid to bring him messages anymore. He welcomes them to Monster Island. Back at his hut, the three scientists argue over the data. He constructed a gamma radiation simulator to communicate with whatever is radiating gamma. He made a Titan phone, or as Bill prefers, a Titan bait.

2015
The Algerian Desert

Cate, Kentaro, Lee, May, and Duvall drive through the desert. Lee can't help but reminisce about his time with the Randa girls. In the backseat, May asks Duvall when she gets to go home. This wasn't part of their deal. She promises to take her home when they leave the desert together. The group arrives at a camp. Cate doesn't want to work with any of the former Monarch operatives. Duvall and Lee insist that everyone who's there is an ex-operative. Lee is sorry all their business is tangled up, but they must work together. May, off a look from Duvall, reminds Cate their only way out is through.

1955

Lee answers the radio call from Bill, who tells him their work on the island is the real deal. Lee asks how Keiko is doing, but Bill purposefully avoids him. They're after a big fish.

General Puckett is grilling in his backyard when Lee arrives. He wants to go where Monarch is, though Puckett reminds him that a career can only be made if Lee does the right things. If Lee does things right, he can run Monarch his way one day.

The Algerian Desert

The groups arrive at Hiroshi's spot on the map. They find a body of water in the plain but nothing else. Kentaro points something out to Lee, who uses binoculars to find Hiroshi on the other side of the ridge. Kentaro, Lee, and Cate call out to Hiroshi, who gestures for them to run.

1955
Hateruma Island

Dr. Suzuki's device is in the water emitting waves. The lack of immediate results initially annoys Bill. Suzuki asks if Keiko has seen a Titan before, and she tells him he has. He thinks it's good they're scary because miracles should be terrifying. Lee pulls up in an Army jeep. He skipped the money meeting. Bill introduces Lee to Suzuki, who made the gamma-ray radiation simulator. Suzuki and Bill walk off to give Keiko and Lee time to talk. She's angry at him and walks away.

2015

Hateruma Island

Lee talks to Keiko on the dock. His place is with her, protecting her. She thinks his job should be protecting Monarch. He can't deny that he came for her. She doesn't think they should be together because she doesn't trust that they can put Monarch, or the greater good, before their desires. He claims that he doesn't care, and they kiss. She knows he does care. The water stirs, and the device stops, disappearing under the water. Seconds later, it catapults through the air onto land. From the water emerges a terrifying Titan with a shrill roar and horned body. Godzilla roars before disappearing back into the water. Lee realizes they didn't kill it.

The Algerian Desert

The desert ground shakes and splinters before shattering. A shrill roar rips through the air as Kentaro, Lee, Cate, Duvall, and May tumble down a cliff. They dodge a flying vehicle and barely get to their feet in time. Cate recognizes the shrill sound of the creature emerging behind her - it's Godzilla. The creature stands up, making eye contact with Cate. Tim demands the helicopter pull up, but Godzilla knocks it out of the air before releasing a roar. The creature turns away from the group, his tail destroying a ridge. He marches away as Cate realizes Godzilla saw her and is leaving.

1955

Keiko, Lee, and Billy argue over telling the military and Puckett that Godzilla survived. She doesn't want them to create a weapon to kill Godzilla because they may use it to destroy something else instead. Lee insists they need something, anything, to show Puckett and get them out of the dog house. Keiko concedes, and they enter their Monarch room. They find several military members inside, including one Puckett spoke to during the ball. During Shaw's unauthorized disappearance, Puckett handed control and command of Project Monarch to the officer. He expects a full report by the end of the day.

Lee reports that no one survived the helicopter crash. He needs to find where Godzilla is going. Cate wants her father's map back, but Lee refuses. They only want to find Hiroshi. Lee and Duvall straighten up their battered vehicle and leave. Cate, Kentaro, and May walk back to civilization. The siblings try to figure out what Hiroshi is doing there. Cate is eager to find their father as they are getting closer. She's assuming May has a backup of the map. May refuses to go any further because this is all her fault. She sold them out. May explains that she had to run away and reinvent herself a few years ago. She made a deal with Monarch to get her life back and have her life back. May has a lot of money to get Cate wherever she wants to go. Cate doesn't want to hear her anymore and walks away.
