The Vampyr Slug is one of the many good reasons why wading into opaque waters in the Skull Island wetlands is generally a poor decision. These slimy brown parasitic worms breed amongst the thick foliage and algae of Skull Island swamps, where they also wait for a blood meal to come close enough to strike. While they rarely ever leave the water, except when carried out by one of their victims, Vampyr Slugs have adapted to the megafauna of Skull Island, and so are considerably bigger than their normal Earth parasites. But this does not stop them from trying to prey on explorers or Monarch personnel.

Like leeches, the Vampyr Slug feeds on blood. Unlike conventional leeches, however, the Vampyr Slug does not attach to its victim’s skin. Instead, it burrows underneath it, and it can do so with truly alarming speed and force. For larger animals, Vampyr Slugs are a common parasite, but for humans they create massive skin trauma and intense pain, not to mention considerable horror.

Removing a Vampyr Slug is challenging. Violent removal tends to cause further skin damage and bleeding to the victim. Monarch First Aid staff members have had luck using an injected poison to kill the Slug, and then removing it with surgery. Vampyr Slugs are surprisingly resilient, however, and field studies have shown that, if they are bisected, both halves of the creature will regenerate and each one will become a new individual.

Despite their predatory nature, Vampyr Slugs are actually a very common food source for many wetlands creatures on Skull Island. And, due to their physical resilience, eating and digesting them seems to be one of the few reliable means of controlling their population.
