During the Vietnam War, the government of North Vietnam which was backed by the Soviet Union and their allies and the government of South Vietnam, which was backed by the U.S and their allies. The Sky Devils were one of the many squadrons that fought in the war and were stationed at Da Nang Air Base.
In 1973, multiple protests occurred to end U.S involvement in Vietnam. As the war was beginning to die down, the Sky Devils were ordered to withdraw from Vietnam after President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of all American soldiers to end the war.
In Saigon, Preston Packard received a call that he and his team were needed to drop bombs to record seismic activity on an uncharted terrain. Houston Brooks and Bill Randa later went to Saigon where Randa sought to recruit former British Special Air Service solider James Conrad. When Randa and Brooks found him, he was playing pool in a bar/brothel in Saigon. They also witnessed him fighting off a pair of thugs before approaching him to recruit him for an expedition to Skull Island.
